7 ways to update your bob

We all go through this contradictory phase with our hair where we have absolutely no interest in cutting it, but we still want a brand new and noticeably different look. This situation is especially frustrating when you have a bob. If going for the daring pixie cut or buying a set of expensive extensions isn't up your alley, you might find yourself in a monotonous hair rut.

More: The most flattering hairstyles for round faces

Thankfully, there are a ton of hairstyling options and even a few minor cutting techniques you can do to give yourself an updated 'do without drastically changing the popular length. To help you figure out how to style a bob, we pulled together 7 options for you to choose from.

7 Ways to Update Your Bob

1. Blunt Bangs

If you already have a blunt bob, try giving your look even more of a mod vibe and cut bangs of a medium-thickness that fall right below your eyebrows. While they may need some management, the length provides you with the option of pulling them back or growing them out with ease.

2. Fake Bangs With a Bobby Pin

We've said it before and we'll say it again. The bobby pin is completely underrated. Fake fringe without actually cutting them by parting your hair on the side and pulling the hair over your forehead and then pinning it back with a bobby pink or a dressy barrette. The pins will also double up as a cute hair accessory.

3. The Thick Headband

Give your workout headband another wear and rock it during the day, using it to pull flat-ironed hair back and out of your face. This look is ideal for someone transitioning their bangs. Place the headband right at your hairline and be sure to calm your hair of fly-aways and static for a sleek look.

4. A Middle Part

You might not believe it, but changing your hair part alone can make it appear like you got a new cut. As hair flips into different directions, it creates the illusion of layers, angles, and volume. Go for a modern middle part with a chin-length bob with piece-y texture at the ends.

5. Pinned Curls

Don't get trapped in the thought that you can't do a lot with short hair. That couldn't be less true. Create a 20s-inspired look by with pin curls starting at your ears and followed around your head. Keep the rest of your hair texture-free and smooth, allowing the curls to really pop. When you remove the curls after a few hours, you'll have a wavy, beachy style to wear later.

6. Voluminous Waves

You'll be glad you didn't get rid of your hot rollers. Part your hair on the side and set your hair in 1 ½- inch rollers while you finish getting ready in the morning. They'll need to stay in for at least a half hour, so make sure to plan your time accordingly. When you take them out, keep the style in place with a flexible and long-holding hair spray like Living Proof's Flex Shaping Hairspray. We love the idea of wearing an ear cuff or dramatic dangly earrings on the side opposite your hair part.

7. Trusty Tousled Waves

This is quite possibly the simplest way to update a bob. As long as you have a curling wand and heat-protectant spray, you'll be able to achieve this at home. After curling the hair around your head with a 1-inch curling iron, run your fingers through your hair to separate the tendrils. Keep the pieces around your face in a spiral shape by winding them around your finger. Finish with a spritz of finishing spray or salt spray for even more texture.

Demi Lovato and Luke Rockhold are official - well, Instagram official!

Demi Lovato is rumored to have been spending a lot of time with UFC fighter Luke Rockhold in recent weeks, and this weekend they certainly made the most of their time together.

More: Demi Lovato's hanging out with yet another guy who isn't Wilmer Valderrama

On Saturday, Nov. 12, Lovato and Rockhold were spotted holding hands outside Madison Square Garden, and then just a day later on Nov. 13, they decided to make their relationship official. And by official, we just mean they took to Instagram to share photos of each other.

On Sunday night, Lovato shared a photo of herself and Rockhold taken during the UFC 205. The black and white snap shows her and her rumored new boyfriend looking pretty cozy as she places her hand on his leg. However, Lovato was careful not to give too much away with the caption, simply writing, "About last night…"

Rockhold shared the same photo on his own Instagram account, choosing not to caption it.

Lovato's fans have reacted to the relationship, and it seems they have a lot to say about it. Among the reactions includes one from _wtfcamzi, who wrote, "So happy for u my bae."

Graciela26 commented on how good the pair look together, writing, "They look so hot together," while xhappydreamerx wrote, "So happy for you two." However, not everyone is happy about the match, and many fans have taken to the comment section of Lovato's post to express how much they miss "Dilmer" - the celebrity nickname for Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato. But, if you were still holding out for a reunion of the former couple, we think now would probably be a good time to stop!

While just last week there were reports claiming that Lovato was "not looking for something that serious" -having recently split from longtime love, Valderrama - judging by her eventful weekend with Rockhold, it certainly appears the pair like each other.

More: Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama are never, ever getting back together

Why everyone is talking about getting an IUD right now

No one really knows what, exactly, last night's news means for women's health and reproductive rights yet, but we have some hints. We know Donald Trump is pro-life and wants to defund Planned Parenthood. We know he's pledged to ask Congress to end the Affordable Care Act on his first day as president-seriously, here's a quote from his website: “On day one of the Trump Administration, we will ask Congress to immediately deliver a full repeal of Obamacare.” Couldn't be clearer than that.

The ACA is vital for thousands of reasons, one of which is that yearly visits to the gynecologist and birth control are covered without a copay. Also, it did away with annual or lifetime dollar amounts on healthcare benefits, which is vital for those who have chronic health conditions, and also ended the insane guideline that allowed insurers to deny healthcare to those with preexisting conditions. And the list goes on.

More: Benefits of an IUD

If he's successful in nixing the ACA-and he likely will be-it may no longer be free (with insurance) to access many aspects of women's healthcare, and it might become exceedingly difficult to get an abortion. And that's why Twitter is blowing up today about the importance of going out and getting yourself a lasting birth control option ASAP-namely, an IUD.

Trump has gone on the record to say he's pro-life. “I'm totally against abortion, having to do with Planned Parenthood,” he said during a CNN-Telemundo Republican debate on February 25. Though he acknowledged that Planned Parenthood is important-“Millions and millions of women-cervical cancer, breast cancer-are helped by Planned Parenthood,” he said-in the next breath, he denounced it. “I wouldn't fund it. I would defund it because of the abortion factor, which they say is three percent. I don't know what percentage it is. They say it's three percent. But I would defund it, because I'm pro-life. But millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood.”

Yep. Those are the illustrious words of the president-elect. So-if you were thinking of securing some lasting birth control, now's the time to consider an IUD.

Tim Gunn was right to save Cornelius Ortiz on Project Runway

Cornelius Ortiz is arguably the least-liked guy on the current season of Project Runway, and for good reason: He's abrasive, he's overly confident and he has a tendency to trash talk his fellow contestants. It's hard to cheer for somebody who throws that much shade, which is perhaps why, when both Mah-Jing Wong and Ortiz were mistreated by their respective teams during tonight's episode, viewers really only spoke out in Wong's favor.

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

Believe it or not, we're here to defend Ortiz. He was on top of this week's team challenge, which involved creating a collection for a pop-up street display, all while abiding by a specific color scheme. Ortiz was grouped with Dexter Simmons and Erin Robertson, and once again, it was obvious that he was the odd one out. His vision did not match the vision of his fellow contestants, who were way too into the head-to-toe red look.

Erin Robertson
Image: Lifetime

Ortiz voiced his concerns, but his opinion was disregarded. Not only did his fellow teammates fail to give his viewpoint the consideration it deserved, they were willing to sit back and let him do the bulk of the work while they goofed off together.

More: Brik Allen did not deserve his early Project Runway elimination

Despite all of Ortiz's hard work, the red group performed poorly both among pedestrians viewing the pop-up booth and with the judges. The judges didn't think the red group's looks were terrible; they just didn't live up to the other groups. The teammates were then given the opportunity to share who they thought should go home, and of course, both Simmons and Robertson threw Ortiz under the bus. Not cool - Ortiz's instincts were on point and he was clearly not responsible for the team's loss.

Tim Gunn
Image: Lifetime

Thank God for Tim Gunn, who came through with the save. Gunn can see past Ortiz's abrasiveness to the natural fashion instinct that he has consistently demonstrated. He delivered the good news backstage and put a stop to what could have been this season's most dramatic stand-off.

More: Project Runway's swimsuits are not the way to inspire body confidence

It's crazy how quickly contestant perception can shift on this show. Robertson was the darling just a few weeks ago, and Ortiz was the villain. Now, we're cautiously rooting for Ortiz, if only because he was so clearly wronged by his teammates and by the judges.

Do you think Cornelius Ortiz should have been on the chopping block? Did Tim Gunn use his save wisely? Comment and share your opinion below.

Kelly Ripa couldn't decide on one Halloween costume so she wore them all

Kelly Ripa clearly faced the similar difficult question as the rest of us: With so many great, topical Halloween costume options, how do you choose just one?

More: Jerry O'Connell loves Kelly Ripa so much

So she didn't.

On Monday's Halloween episode of Live!, Ripa pulled out all the stops and wore pretty much every costume. First, she came out dressed as Beyoncé in Lemonade, clearly a popular choice for this year.

Image: WABC-TV

While Ripa rocked her Bey look, guest co-host Jeffrey O'Connell was dressed as Negan from The Walking Dead, before Ripa herself donned that costume - and a barbed wire bat, of course, to swing it at one of her co-hosting prospects: Neil Patrick Harris, Jimmi Simpson or O'Connell.

In a nod to the epic cliffhanger on TWD, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, made a brief appearance to help Ripa choose, though the camera cut away without revealing his choice. Guess we'll find out next season.

Image: Giphy

Next up was Hamilton, and Ripa's chance to joke about her indecision when it comes to picking out a Halloween costume.

Image: WABC-TV

"My game is Kelly Ripa's Halloween and there's a million wigs I haven't worn," she sang, dressed as the founding father from the famous musical. "But just you wait! Just you wait!"

More: Christian Slater as Kelly Ripa's Live! co-host? OK, we can see that...

Other costumes Ripa tried on during the show included Mr. Robot's Elliot and Harley Quinn.

Kelly Ripa Halloween Harley Quinn

But easily one of her best looks was Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump. For that look, Ripa wore a bad combover wig, a black suit and way, way too much bronzer.

Image: WABC-TV

"I brought my smoking hot wife Melania," she said in a Trump impression during a Family Feud sketch featuring the candidate and his wife. "My gorgeous daughter Ivanka - isn't she beautiful, folks? We are going to make game shows great again!"

More than 15 million children in high-mortality hotspots in sub-Saharan Africa, researchers find

A new spatial analysis from Stanford shows that progress in combating child mortality has been highly uneven, even within countries where overall declines are substantial

8 things moms say that totally gaslight their kids

We often hear about boyfriends or girlfriends gaslighting their significant others by saying things and denying their feelings in a way that actually begins making them question their own sanity. But the young men and women who gaslight often become the same dads and moms who use this effective and disastrous form of psychological torture to maintain the control and power they so desperately associate with their worth.

Parents who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder, many of whom remain clueless that they even have a sense of entitlement and feed off of attention and drama as ways to feel important, are often the same folks who put their kids through gaslighting hell. At the root of it all, they'll do almost anything to be right, maintain their influence over the people in their home and to ensure they are the center of their kids' universes.

No matter how much it may not seem like it at times, kids listen when their parents speak. One of a gaslighter's most potent weapons is her words - and these eight classic phrases are often used by a parent in an attempt to gaslight her child so that she feels better about herself:

1. "You're just being sensitive": Because the narcissistic parent has a lot of trouble empathizing with her child, it's a lot easier to label her kid "sensitive" and call it a day than to actually have to address the fact that her little one may be reacting for a perfectly logical reason - that perfect reason being that she feels an emotion and has a right to it. Period.

2. "You owe me an apology": It makes no difference if the parent started an insane fight over something small and then exploded and called her child a name. At the end of the day, a parent who gaslights insists on her kid apologizing for all grievances, because she's the parent, and it's her way or the highway.

3. "That never happened, and you're making it up": Selective memory, anyone? The gaslighting parent has no problem dictating to her child, verbatim, what he said to her that was so hurtful, but if her child insists on telling his version of things, she'll simply deny it ever happened and possibly accuse him of lying.

4. "I don't want to hear this anymore": The parent who gaslights always has the honor of deciding when a conversation has ended and when her child's thoughts and feelings are no longer welcome.

5. "Are you seriously angry about that?": As if there is no rational reason her child should be mad that Mom decided at the last minute to not take her to the park as promised. A kid who constantly hears this from a parent grows up doubting his right to assert himself.

6. "You're not really going to wear that, are you?": You disapprove of your child's wardrobe and wish she would stop wearing peasant blouses or dyeing her hair orange. Instead of accepting her for her choices, you leave that little question lingering in her head to make her feel like she's crazy for wanting to wear something so obviously hideous or so unflattering on her.

7. "Stop crying": Other ways parents stifle their kids include telling them to wipe that pout off their face and to toughen up - usually not because they want them to become strong individuals, but because they can't handle their kids' emotions or the feeling that they have somehow failed them.

8. "It's not always about you": Nope, it isn't. And that's because 99 percent of the time, it's always about the parent who gaslights, leaving no room for the child and his emotions to exist.

Emily Ratajkowski is the type of judge Project Runway needs

The usual Project Runway judges are amazing, but after so many seasons, the show sometimes needs somebody fresh - and somebody who doesn't mindlessly agree with Heidi Klum. That's exactly what guest judge Emily Ratajkowski delivered during tonight's episode. After a season full of constant agreement from the judges, it was refreshing to finally see some differences in opinion.

Heidi Klum
Image: Lifetime

The item in question was a chandelier-inspired dress, which was designed to look both sparkly and sophisticated. According to Nathalia JMag, beaded fabric is the epitome of luxury. Unfortunately, she was forced to put it all together in less than four hours. As a result the craftsmanship was, well, lacking. Furthermore, as Cornelius Ortiz aptly pointed out, the dress didn't really feel true to JMag's style.

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

Klum was not a fan of JMag's look; she claimed that it reminded her of a cheap dress that a teenager might buy at the mall. Ouch! The other judges echoed her opinion, complaining that it looked far from luxurious.

More: I hate to say it, but Tim Gunn was so wrong to trash Emily Ratajkowski's dress

Surprisingly enough, Ratajkowski was eager to defend JMag. She said that, although there were some definite issues with the dress, it caught her attention. She found most of the other designs boring, so JMag's look was a breath of fresh air.

Project Runway
Image: Lifetime

Now, for full disclosure: I'm totally with Klum on this one. The dress just didn't have the high fashion look I've come to expect from Project Runway's best and brightest designers. It would fit in better at Charlotte Russe or Wet Seal. That being said, the dress was definitely daring, which I firmly believe should be the goal on Project Runway. Nobody tunes in to see designers play it safe - viewers expect contestants to think outside of the box and take risks.

JMag definitely did not play it safe, and for that, she should be commended. Her dress might not have stood out in a good way, but on a runway full of "safe" (read: boring) designs, it was nice to see something different.

More: Project Runway's swimsuits are not the way to inspire body confidence

I love when judges on any show have differing viewpoints. Yes, they are going to agree much of the time, but in an industry as subjective as fashion, I think it's valuable to hear various opinions. Kudos to Ratajkowski for speaking up!

What did you think of Nathalia JMag's chandelier-inspired dress on Project Runway? Comment and share your opinion below.

Joe Jonas admits that losing his virginity was a total mess - literally

There's nothing better than a super-candid celebrity Reddit AMA. Up until now, Channing Tatum's 2015 "ask me anything" interview was on the top of our list, mostly because of his extremely creative answers about how he would survive the zombie apocalypse and what he'd choose to have with him on a deserted island.

As amazing as Tatum's AMA was, it's quite possible that Joe Jonas' Oct. 11 post is now our absolute fave - for a couple reasons.

For one, while we learned in Tatum's AMA that his penis is named Gilbert, Jonas got asked how his member compares to the rest of the JoBros, and his answer is priceless.

More: 5 celebs Joe Jonas channels in DNCE's new music video 'Body Moves'

"I like to think so," Jonas answered when ask if his penis is bigger than his siblings'. "Although, it's not often that I'm in a locker room or shower with my brothers, so I couldn't really tell you. But, I'd like the Internet to believe that I'm still killin' it."

And believe it, we shall.

As much as we love that last witty quip, Jonas' anecdote about losing his virginity to Ashley Greene is even better.

"I lost my virginity to this girl named Ashley," he said. "You can probably just Google it. It's pretty easy to figure out. I dated a girl named Ashley, so just Google it to figure out which Ashley that is. It's quite the great story because I didn't have any condoms, so I went to our drummer Jack's room, who was my roommate at the time and I demolished his room looking for them. Found them underneath his underwear drawer. When he came home, he thought somebody broke into his room because his whole room was demolished because I was in dire need. Needed to happen then and now. Safety first, kids."

More: After some research, we may know what Nick & Joe Jonas' tattoos mean

When you've been wearing a purity ring for all of your adolescence and have Ashley Greene waiting for you, well, it's not hard to imagine why Jonas was so frantic.

What was your favorite part of Jonas' Reddit AMA?

Looks like Billy Bush's sexist conversation with Donald Trump was career suicide

Update, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. PST: Billy Bush reportedly plans to sue NBC over the leaked tape that got him axed from the Today show.

According to Bush, Access Hollywood was planning to air the tape with Bush's identity protected, but NBC leaked it early.

"He told people at NBC about this tape," a source revealed. "What if there was a transcript of the tape, and high-level discussions about when to release it? Which executives were involved, and why did they decide to suppress the tape until October, when they could have aired it in August? Was it an oversight or a strategic decision by NBC to affect the race? Billy was far from the only person at NBC who was talking about the contents of this tape. On-air talent does not make the decision when to air stories like this."

Original article:

By now you've probably heard about Billy Bush and Donald Trump's sexist conversation that was recorded 11 years ago but only recently published by The Washington Post. The backlash to it was swift and has resulted in Bush being suspended from the Today show.

More: Billy Bush's 'locker room' talk with Donald Trump has come back to bite him

But does this video and Bush's subsequent suspension from NBC signal the end of his career? A source recently told People magazine that there's talk that Bush "can't recover" from this recent scandal, adding, "It's so ironic that the place that got him there - his job on Access Hollywood - is now destroying him."

The source also went on to state that the leak was "purposeful" and that it came from a source high up. "They could have released the tape and edited him out," the source stated. "That was the plan - they were trying to approve it, and then someone leaked it. That's what Access Hollywood eventually did, and they played it … but it was already out."

The source also notes that no one wanted to protect Bush - and they had plenty of opportunity to do so. They said, "If they wanted to protect him, they could have edited it out, which they did on the final Access [Hollywood] piece that aired on Friday, but they left it in when it was leaked."

Bush has commented on the recording, claiming that he was sorry for his actions and deeply ashamed by his remarks. However, a large part of the Today viewership is composed of women, and it's not clear whether viewers - or staffers - will be willing to forgive and forget such sexist and demeaning "locker room" talk.

To make things even worse for Bush, there are rumors that Carson Daly is set to replace him (at least temporarily). According to Page Six, two people familiar with the situation at NBC have revealed that on Tuesday, Daly is expected to co-host the Today show with Tamron Hall, although there's no confirmation of how long he's meant to be on the show.

According to the publication, if Bush does end up returning, it might not be anytime soon as NBC considers the actions it plans to take.

Steve Jobs: The real story behind Jobs and his daughter Lisa

If you haven't seen the 2015 Steve Jobs movie yet - based on the book of the same name by Walter Isaacson and with a stellar Rotten Tomatoes rating of 86 percent - there's still plenty of time. A year later, and the media's continuing to buzz about the highly rated movie, which you can catch for free on HBO Go or rent on iTunes or Amazon Video. The biggest topic of interest? We're all still trying to figure out what really went on between Jobs and his daughter Lisa, and how much was exaggerated for the sake of the big screen.

Separating fact from fiction

It's common knowledge that movie and TV plotlines are normally, shall we say, embellished - even when based on a true story. This is exactly what got fans to talking after seeing the movie. We see Steve Jobs' daughter Lisa appear in multiple stages and ages throughout the movie, played by three different actresses as she grows up.

More: One Steve Jobs trailer flaw involves Kate Winslet's character

And while the movie mainly focuses on Jobs' legacy and lifetime achievements, broken up into three different acts based on major product releases, critics say the interaction between Jobs and Lisa in the movie is actually a metaphor for his ego and his need to control everything around him.

Here's what we know about the real Lisa Brennan-Jobs: Born May 17, 1978, Lisa Nicole Brennan is the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' daughter from his high school love, Chrisann Brennan. Jobs wasn't present for Lisa's birth, but he came to visit a few days after she was born.

The name Lisa was then given to a new computer Jobs was working on, but he created the acronym "Local Integrated Software Architecture" to explain the name to customers. In a very strange act of parenting, he told Lisa he did not name the computer after her. According to Isaacson's book, Steve Jobs, years later Jobs said, "Obviously, it was named for my daughter."

More: Jobs movie review: Ashton Kutcher's sleek hardware

Strangely, though, perhaps terrified by the prospect of being a father, Jobs publicly denied being Lisa's dad, and a legal case followed. Even after a DNA paternity test established Jobs as Lisa's father, he made up a ridiculous argument that because the DNA test said he was 94.1 percent likely to be Lisa's father, 28 percent of the male population could also be Lisa's father. Years later, Jobs apologized for the cruel remarks.

Once paternity was legally declared, Jobs was forced to give Lisa's mom $385 per month in child support. He increased the amount to a mere $500 a month once he became a millionaire. As Lisa Brennan got older, she and her father reconciled, and she even lived with him during high school. She legally changed her name to Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Wanting to be a writer, Lisa attended Harvard University and graduated in 2000.

Next up: Lisa Brennan-Jobs is the real star of the movie

Lisa Brennan-Jobs is the real star of the movie

According to AppleInsiderLisa Brennan-Jobs gave a rare interview in which she spoke about her life after her father's death, saying, "It wasn't until really he passed away that we all as kids and my mother realized how much he really had an effect on the family. And while he wasn't involved on a kind of day-to-day basis, when I think of who I am today and who my brothers and sisters are, so much of it is thanks to my father."

MoreAshton Kutcher hospitalized after trying Steve Jobs' fruit diet

When asked why she didn't pursue computer engineering like her father, she said Jobs urged his children to explore different fields and find what made them happy. But it's easy to see that a career in technology would be intimidating, considering he accomplished so much in his short life. "He encouraged us to follow our dreams. I had big shoes to fill if I wanted to go into science," Brennan-Jobs said.

Steve Jobs screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, said he discussed the movie with Lisa Brennan-Jobs before making it and calls her the "heroine of the film."

According to Business Insider, Sorkin also said, "At first I didn't know what I was looking for. Lisa didn't speak to Walter Isaacson when Walter was writing the book because her father was alive at the time. But she was willing to speak to me. She was able to tell stories about her father that weren't necessarily flattering stories, but she would tell the story and then show me how you could see he really did love her."

Lisa Brennan-Jobs has three half-siblings, Reed, Erin and Eve, whose mother is Jobs' widow, Laurene Powell Jobs. Lisa Brennan-Jobs is currently a freelance writer living in New York and has written for such publications as O, The Oprah Magazine and Vogue. You can also read Lisa Brennan-Jobs' blog. In the movie, Brennan-Jobs is played by actresses Ripley Sobo, Makenzie Moss and Perla Haney-Jardine at various ages.

Lisa Brennan-Jobs

But that still doesn't answer the question on everyone's mind: Was the portrayal of Steve Jobs' daughter in the movie really accurate? There are plenty of facts about Lisa in the movie that have been confirmed - like the paternity dispute and the initial denial that Jobs named the Apple Lisa after his daughter. And yet, like most on-screen adaptations, the Steve Jobs movie isn't 100 percent on point.

The scene of 5-year-old Lisa bonding with Jobs backstage by using MacPaint is reported to be pure fiction. And while we don't want to give away any spoilers, the big reconciliation between Jobs and Lisa at the end of the movie also leaves out the fact that Jobs had remarried and had three other kids. What's true is most of the good stuff, though some details may be shaky. Jobs and Lisa were in a much better place before he died in 2011, and their tumultuous relationship alone makes the movie worth watching.

For those who haven't seen the film just yet, here's the official trailer for Steve Jobs, released in 2015:

Core blimey!

If you've tried every kind of diet and workout programme to get killer abs, it's time to turn your attention to your whole core…

Most of us will have a goal to work towards on our journey to becoming fitter and healthier – we wouldn't be motivated without it!

But while these may vary from weight loss to building strength, there's no denying that a flat stomach remains the stamp of what many consider a 'fit' bod. If it's not a rigorous bout of abs-focused classes that we put our bodies through, it's the yo-yo dieting in a bid to banish the bloat as fast as humanly possible. We all do it, while simultaneously acknowledging that it won't last. After all, there are only so many crunches and cleanses you can do before the cookies and crisps interfere. But as author and physiologist Allison Westfahl points out in her latest book Core Envy, your abs aren't even proof of how fit you are. 'The irony about that flashy six-pack is that it does not in any way imply that you have functional core strength, yet it continues to be the hallmark of a fit sexy body'. According to Allison, you need to focus on strengthening your entire core and not just trying to get a six-pack. This book sets the record straight on the exercises you should (and shouldn't) be doing, plus it explains how simple and enjoyable it can be to eat clean. Core Envy, is the ultimate eight-week guide to a flat and strong tum. Here, we share its top 10 pointers on getting a rock-hard core. We'll see you and your new tum in eight weeks!

It's all in the core

Know the difference

People tend to refer to the abdominals and the core synonymously, but this is a common mistake. While the ab muscles consist of only four groups of muscles, the entire core consists of 11, which means that strong abs don't necessarily account for a strong core. Why choose to work the core over just the abs? 'A high functioning core leads to a better-looking core', says Allison. Instead of crunches, which only work your rectus and can actually shorten it, causing pain and injury,  incorporate plank holds, squats and mountain climbers, which will work all the major muscle groups connected to your core.

Go big

It's important to not forget the big movers of core muscles, as well as the deep ones. That includes your quads, hamstrings and glutes. Another common misconception is that a big bottom is a strong one, but in fact these muscles could be shut off and dependent on the surrounding, smaller muscles like your lower back, which can cause pain and injury.

Check your posture

Poor posture has become increasingly prevalent due to our working environment, but it's not a matter to be shrugged off. At the very least, it affects your appearance – giving you drooping, hunched shoulders and a tummy that appears more filled out than it really is. But the effects can also be grave. Ischemic tissue (tissue that doesn't get oxygen) can develop in the spine area, contributing to the curvature and any pressure on the column can affect the brain's ability to communicate with the muscles. If you're a sloucher, try to readjust your posture by extending your back; you'll notice your abs elongate and hips push backwards, making your gluteal muscles look rounder and more toned. The results couldn't be more instant!

Back again

Whether it was caused by a traumatic event or general wear and tear, disc herniation in the lower back has become a common issue. Bending, twisting, rotating and carrying heavy objects can slowly make the discs less effective. But good posture and a strong core (from working on muscle-toning), can alleviate discomfort and not compromise the health of your spine.

Finish strong

While the core exercises won't burn subcutaneous or visceral fat like cardio will, it will activate and tone your muscles underneath, which will show once you are lean. More importantly, the core exercises will also improve your strength, power, endurance and coordination. So many wins!

 Ace your cardio

The lowdown

Did you know that consistently training at a low intensity can result in weight gain? The human body becomes accustomed to the same exercise, workout or sport and adapts so that it performs at the same level but with less effort. While it means we're performing better, our metabolism has become more efficient, so we're not burning as many calories as we originally were or could if we were to train at a high intensity.

Hit up some HIIT

There's a reason why HIIT is the go-to training method for weight loss and toning – the constantly changing stimuli keep your metabolism on its toes, burning as many calories as it can to keep up. So what constitutes HIIT? All you need to do is spike your heart rate up to 70 per cent, bring it back down to a resting rate and continue alternating. And if you're concerned about it being too intense for your current state of fitness, remember that heart rate is relative, so 70 per cent of your heart rate will be different now from what it will be a few weeks into the programme. Push yourself to your limit!

Stress solution

If you're under a lot of stress for a prolonged period of time, cortisol is released, prompting your body to store fat to protect your organs. This visceral fat is much more dangerous than subcutaneous fat, as it has the ability to travel deep in the body and surround your organs, putting you at more risk of developing serious diseases. So challenge your body with HIIT – it's the most effective form of exercise to combat the visceral fat, which is located deep in the abdomen.

What to eat

Get the numbers right

In order to lose weight and get lean, the calories you consume need to amount to less than what you burn (calorie deficit). The recommended calories deficit is 500 – enough to see a difference over time, but not so much as to make it an unrealistic and unsustainable approach. Those who attempt a deficit of more than 500 calories run the risk of not only burning less when resting, but also upping their chance of putting weight back on when eating at a healthier deficit.

Keep it clean

If cost or convenience are an issue, you'll appreciate Core Envy's diet plan. Fully aware that these elements determine the likelihood of someone's adherence to the plan, Allison has only included produce that is nutritious, readily available, easy to prepare and cost-effective. Expect organic fruit and veg, lean meats and nutrient-dense wholegrains, in a diet low in calories, sugar and saturated fats.

Single moms don't get to choose between fun and hard parenting

Ask a mother if she's happy with her parenting, and you're not going to get a straight answer. No two days or two hours are the same. It's perfectly possible to swing from feeling like a parenting superhero to the worst mom ever within a few minutes.

More: Planning to crowdsource your baby name? Good luck

So I always approach studies that make statements like, "mothers are overall less happy with parenting than fathers" with some amount of skepticism. How do you quantify happiness, for starters? According to a study recently published in the American Sociological Review by the University of Minnesota, Cornell University and the Minnesota Population Center, the gender gap in happiness has a lot to do with the type of tasks each parent is performing.

Using diary entries from over 12,000 U.S. parents from 2010, 2012 and 2013, the study found that mothers reported less happiness, more stress and greater fatigue in time with children than fathers did. This could be accounted for in several ways. Working mothers feel more conflict between family and work than working fathers do. Additionally, men have traditionally had less free time to spend with their kids outside of work, meaning they have greater leeway and less responsibility. Conversely, women are responsible for more of the day-to-day basic care and management tasks and spend a smaller share of their time with children on play.

It's hardly a surprise that parenting roles are different for mothers and fathers. A quick survey of my own parent friends echoed the findings of this study. "Straight after work, I have to make dinner and prepare lunches for the next day, while my husband spends an hour playing football with the kids in the garden," said one. "When my son wakes up in the night, he always comes to me, never his dad," said another. "So I'm exhausted every morning and feel like I'm chasing my tail for the rest of the day."

As a single mom, I'm coming at this from a slightly different perspective. When you're flying solo, you have to provide the fun and the hard work - and striking a balance can be tough. I wouldn't have it any other way, which is just as well because there is no other option, and that's the case for around 12 million single-parent families in the U.S. (over 80 percent of them headed by single moms.)

But for all moms, whether they are going it alone or as part of a team, there are ways to increase the fun quota. Ditch the laundry - or ask Dad to do it - and take the kids to the park. If we want parenting to be a fairer experience, we need to let go of the reins and pass some of the management to the other parent.

Some days - for all parents, however their families are made up - can feel like the longest, most tortuous days. But we all know that even those days go by in a flash and that one day, we'll say the same for our kids' childhoods. Will we look back and wish we'd taken more opportunities to have fun? That we'd at least tried to shake off those traditional gendered parenting roles and try something more equal? It's down to us.

20 small dog breeds that are the cutest creatures on the planet

Pocket-size pooches may not get as much attention as some of the bigger breeds do, but ask any small dog owner, and they'll tell you - the smaller the dog, the bigger the personality. Big things come in small packages, and the American Kennel Club tends to agree.

The Labrador retriever was (unsurprisingly) named the most popular dog in 2015, with plenty of smaller breeds nipping at its heels. Some of the AKC's most popular little breeds included Pomeranians, Yorkies and Boston terriers, and we've got a soft spot for quirky pups like the cockapoo - all of which you'll see on our list. Because size doesn't matter, here are some of the world's most adorable small dog breeds.

1. Yorkshire terrier

Lovingly referred to as the "Yorkie," the Yorkshire terrier is the ultimate cutie in small breeds. Not only are they tiny, some are even "teacup"! Adorable for dress-up or play, the Yorkshire terrier is a small breed with a big personality and perfect as a companion on the go. Yorkies have been a "fashionable" pet since the late Victorian era.

2. Papillon

Another breed that makes an excellent companion, the papillon is a loyal and loving friend. Great with kids and families, this pint-size pup makes an excellent watchdog. Calm but alert, it is extremely protective of its master. A papillon's most distinctive feature is its large butterfly ears.

3. Cavalier King Charles spaniel

Not only is the Cavalier King Charles spaniel adorable, but it loves to cuddle, too! A member of the toy group, this pup is gentle and extremely caring of its family. These dogs are considered to be very elegant, possibly the reason Charlotte York from Sex and the City had one. One of the most popular in small breeds, it's a dog worthy of all of your love.

4. Brussels griffon

Some may think that the Brussels griffon isn't the most attractive dog on the planet, but it sure is cute. A bit awkward looking, Brussels griffons are smart, adaptable and cat-friendly. What they lack in appearance they make up for with their ability to perform a variety of tricks. Not great with kids, it'll make a single owner a very happy one.

Despite the fact that it looks just like a child's toy, the bichon frise is not actually classified as a toy breed but rather one of the non-sporting group. A super-cuddlebug, the bichon frise is also very affectionate and loving toward adults and other furred friends.

8. Pomeranian

Another fluff ball to love up to, the Pomeranian is a compact puppy of Nordic descent. Smart and curious, this is a soft and lively breed. Excellent as a show dog, the Pomeranian is easily trained due to its incredible intelligence. Not very good with kids, this dog does amazingly well with cats.

Time for tea

The humble cuppa is spilling over with health benefits. Here's what science has to say about the nation's favourite beverage

From a delicate cup of Earl Grey to a strong, wake-me-up builder's, there's nothing quite like a good old cuppa, is there?

Tea is the most highly consumed beverage in the world after water and has been sipped by Brits for more than 350 years. Today, a staggering 80 per cent of British adults drink tea and there is now more evidence than ever recognising the role of the beverage in a healthy diet. 'Drinking black, green, oolong and herbal infusions all tick a lot of boxes when it comes to our health – from reducing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis and obesity risks, to protecting against cancer, as well as having oral health and hydration benefits,' says Dr Tim Bond of the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP). We decided to take a look at the ways tea can be more than just the nation's favourite drink...

Drink tea for...

the antioxidants

Antioxidants – the molecules that help prevent the damaging effects of oxidation on cells in the body – play an important role in our diet. And while all teas contain respectable levels of antioxidants, some go the extra mile. 'The primary health-boosting quality of green tea is undoubtedly its content of antioxidants,' says Cassandra Barns, a nutritionist and health writer. 'These include a type of flavonol called catechins, of which the most abundant is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Catechins have been found to have anti-inflammatory activity, anti-cancer and anti-ageing properties, among others.' Looking for a real antioxidant hit? Matcha comes out on top with the content of EGCG available more than 100 times greater than that found in a standard green tea.

Drink tea to...

reduce your risk of disease

A mug of tea may look fairly unassuming, but growing research suggests it can actually help tackle some of the biggest health dilemmas we face today. 'Data pooled from a recent “super study” [by the Department of Neurosurgery, Shanghai Seventh People's Hospital, China] found that regular tea consumption [three cups of black tea daily] reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 27 per cent, and the risk of suffering a stroke by 21 per cent,' Dr Bond explains. Further research by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) found that drinking three cups of tea, three cups of coffee or a combination of both daily reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by approximately 42 per cent. Paula Grainger and Karen Sullivan, authors of recipe book Infuse: Teas to Cleanse, Nourish and Heal maintain that the use of cinnamon in tea could help stave off the disease, too: 'Recent research suggests that cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels and help prevent type 2 diabetes.' But it doesn't stop there. Dr Stephen Hsu, a cell biologist in the Medical College of Georgia Department of Oral Biology, has determined that compounds in green tea called polyphenols help eliminate free radicals (which can cause cancer by altering DNA) while safeguarding healthy cells.

Drink tea for...

weight loss

From weight maintenance to weight loss, black, white and green tea have all been hailed as heroes when it comes to our waistline. Researchers from Germany, for example, labelled white tea a 'natural source of slimming substances' after it was found that an extract of the tea effectively inhibits generation of new human fat cells (adipocytes) and stimulates fat mobilisation from mature cells. Green tea has also been found to be effective. 'Green tea may support weight loss in several ways: increasing thermogenesis (calorie burning), increasing fat oxidation (burning of fat for energy), reducing fat absorption, and even reducing appetite!' says Cassandra. Black tea, too, was found to significantly inhibit weight gain by an average of 0.64kg and reduce waist circumference by 1.88cm, according to the Department of Nutrition at the University of Oslo.

Drink tea to...

protect your bones

Did you know you can support bone health with a cuppa? 'It's been found that EGCG can decrease our numbers of the cells that break down bone – and increase the numbers and activity of the cells that build bone,' explains Cassandra. And it's not just green tea that gives our bones some TLC. According to Dr Bond, black tea can also reduce the risk of osteoporotic fracture, particularly in women.

'In an Australian study, the consumption of three or more cups of black tea daily was associated with a 30 per cent reduced risk of osteoporotic fracture,' he explains. How does the humble black tea do it? 'It's thought that the flavonoids found in tea may have contributed to these benefits,' adds Dr Bond.

Drink tea for...

oral health

High levels of fluoride make tea a brilliant way to maintain good oral health. 'Tea is a natural source of fluoride, as the tea plant absorbs fluoride present in the soil of tea-producing countries,' explains Professor Robin Seymour, a periodontologist and an advisor to TAP. A recent study published in Nutrition Bulletin reviewed fluoride levels in 49 different tea bags and found that levels ranged from 0.72-1.68mg per serving – a quarter to a half of the European recommended daily allowance. Why the difference? 'The level of fluoride in tea leaves will depend on where the tea is grown, with countries such as Kenya being particularly good for fluoride-rich soils,' Professor Seymour adds. Green tea has also been recognised as having potent antibacterial activity against several of the bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay – so much so that it can even be used as mouthwash. What's more, 'several studies have found that green tea can help reduce bad breath thanks to its natural disinfectant and deodorant activities,' adds Cassandra.

When it comes to digestive issues, herbal tea can help restore balance. 'Almost all herbs work to detoxify the body to some extent, improving and soothing digestion, and ridding your organs of toxins to ensure they work at optimal level,' explain Paula and Karen. 'When you're feeling sluggish, tired and run down, a cup of healing herbal tea may be all it takes to get you going again.' Peppermint, for example, has now been proven to be an effective pain reliever for IBS. Fennel can help relieve bloating; ginger is extremely effective for nausea, indigestion and motion sickness; while rooibos has been praised for improving digestion. Suffering from constipation? 'Rhubarb root and yellow dock gently stimulate movement, while cramp bark, chamomile and aromatic spices prevent pain,' say Paula and Karen.

a calmer mind

Feeling stressed? Can't focus? Worried about your memory? Tea is on hand! 'The primary reason that tea is a better choice when we're stressed is thanks to its content of a natural substance called L-theanine, which is virtually unique to the tea plant,' Cassandra explains. 'L-theanine has been found to have a relaxing effect on the mind, reduce anxiety, and help with concentration. It's thought to do this by increasing alpha waves in the brain, which are associated with being 'calm but alert' – i.e increasing relaxation without causing drowsiness.' (Matcha is thought to be particularly high in L-theanine.) Studies have also suggested that catechins in green tea can reach the brain and help protect the neurons (nerve cells), as well as reducing decline in brain function. 'It's been reported that the catechins in green tea can help prevent the build-up of both amyloid plaques and phosphorylated tau proteins – processes that occur in people with Alzheimer's disease, and lead to a decline in memory and cognitive function,' Cassandra says. Moreover, herbal tea is wonderful for calming the mind. 'Many herbs can have a dramatic effect on emotional health, easing anxiety, depression, sleep problems, mood swings and symptoms of stress,' say Paula and Karen.
