More: Female surgeon brilliantly tackles discrimination in the workplace
The post starts off pretty promising, and explains the job requirement and the list of skills that job applicants should possess, including the normal "computer knowledge," "superior organizational abilities" and "responsibilities of a receptionist" — oh wait, the last one is not exactly normal. In the closing line of the description, the recruiter writes, "Please note that the Position requires filling in the responsibilities of a receptionist, so female candidates are preferred." They. Went. There.
Who knows, the company might be a brilliant place to work, but their job description was particularly ill thought-out, and follows an outdated gendered way of thinking that we are all too familiar with; you see a female surgeon and she is assumed to be a nurse, or in this case, only a woman can be a receptionist. We're tired of female stereotypes associated with various professions, and judging by the fact this post has now been deleted, it certainly seems to suggest we are not the only ones who feel this way.
