Michelle Obama just played the mom card at the DNC and she nailed it

For eight years, Michelle Obama has been the First Lady of America. But she's also been America's mom, the woman out there telling our kids to eat their vegetables, to get outside and play. Is it any wonder America's mom just turned the entire election into a commentary on how you raise your kids? Is there any other way to look at the First Lady's Democratic National Convention speech?

More: Who is Tim Kaine's wife, Anne Holton, anyway?

Coming on the heels of an impassioned New Jersey Senator Cory Booker calling for "a country that doesn't degrade or demean other folks, but elevates our nation and pulls us together," Michelle Obama stepped in to remind us that little pitchers have very big ears ... and they're listening to all the infighting, back-biting and Donald Trump's schoolyard bullying.

Using her own girls as stand ins for every American child, Michelle Obama reminded us that she tells her girls, "When someone is cruel or acts like a bully you don't stoop to their level."

She told us what kind of president she wants for her girls, a president who knows that the issues of a presidency aren't black and white and cannot be "boiled down to 140 characters."

She wants "a president with a record of public service, someone whose life's work shows our children that we don't chase fame & fortune for ourselves."

More: Republicans are confusing feelings with facts - and it's dangerous

She wants all us American parents to sit down and have a good long think about who it is we want our kids to see on the TV screen while they're eating their Cheerios before school, because that's the person they're going to be looking up to for at least the next four years. Do we want the woman who will let little girls and little boys both know that gender is not a barrier to anything, not even the presidency? Or do we want the guy who mocks people with disabilities on camera and calls women fat pigs?

And after you've got the whole "I pick good role models for my kids" issue sorted, next comes the "I plan for my kids' futures" issue, courtesy of Mrs. Obama, because squirreling a little mad money away for the day they go to college isn't going to be a help for them if the country they call home is a hot mess.

As the First Lady pointed out, "Being president is about one thing and one thing only. It's about leaving something better for our kids."

One president gets four years to change a nation for the better or the worse, and if they take America down the wrong path, getting back to the beginning is no easy course correction (see also President Barack Obama's uphill battle to fix an economic disaster he inherited).

"We cannot afford to be tired or frustrated or cynical," Obama said. "Between now and November we need to do what did eight years ago and four years ago. we need to knock on every door. We need to get out every vote."

Put more directly, America's mom just told us all to stop being so G.D. self-centered and start thinking about what the hell is going to happen after our Facebook memes and Twitter hashtags have been lost in the ether and a whole other generation has to deal with the consequences of what we do ... or don't do ... come November. Because choosing a president isn't about who has the cleverest quips or the coolest swag, who's got the best Instagram photos or who can convince Chachi to break every '70s kid's ever loving heart. And lest you think she's preaching to the wrong choir, let's not forget that this speech came just about an hour after Sarah Silverman had to hush a crowd full of angry Bernie or Bust protesters booing her for crossing the aisle to support Hillary Clinton.

There are a lot of angry Americans who aren't exactly sitting down with clear heads to think through what it will actually take to get a candidate elected this fall ... or what will happen if they can't come together for one.

If you can't do it for yourself, take the First Lady's advice ... do it for your kids.

I support Caitlyn Jenner's right to be trans and a Republican

The Republican National Convention is in full swing this week. It's been drawing a lot of attention, but no one has outshined Caitlyn Jenner at the event. If you're confused about why Jenner would be a Republican, it seems you're not alone. She told the crowd outside the convention, “It was easy to come out as trans. It was hard to come out as Republican.”

Part of her was joking, but there's definitely truth behind what she was saying. Many people were shocked to see her show up to support Donald Trump - a guy who hasn't been kind to the LGBT community during his campaign.

Margaret Hoover, president of the American Unity Fund, talked to Jenner outside the Convention and asked if she was actually a “real Republican” despite being part of the LGBT community. Jenner said yes and that although she believes more Republicans need to know more trans people, she believes in what the party stands for.

Jenner said, "I feel like our best hope to get back to a constitutional government... is a Republican party... I'm not giving up on this country. I'm not giving up on this constitution. I want jobs for everybody."

When asked what she thinks Trump should know, she said, "I would tell Donald that there are people out there that have been marginalized for so many years... it's about the next generation coming up. We have to provide a safe environment for them."

While it's hard to believe that Jenner is backing Trump, her responses do prove that she's trying to do the best for the LGBT community while not compromising her personal beliefs. And truthfully, we need more of that nuanced talk when we all bring up politics. It's when we blindly support one side without thinking critically about what we want for America that we get into trouble.

Well, that and letting Trump get this far into the campaign process.

I applaud Jenner for speaking honestly about what she thinks and supports politically. She's definitely been through enough that she could have shied away from the topic and no one would blame her. No one can ever say she isn't brave.

Moderately reducing calories in non-obese people reduces inflammation

BOSTON - Eating less may help us lead longer, healthier lives, according to the new results from a large, multicenter study, led by researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. The paper, published in Aging, reveals that restricting calories by 25 percent in healthy non-obese individuals over two years, while maintaining adequate protein, vitamin, and mineral intake, can significantly lower markers of chronic inflammation without negatively affecting other parts of the immune system.

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green announced their split a little too soon

In great news for the Fox Austin Green clan, their publicists and their fans, Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green decided to move onwards and upwards and forget about that whole separation thing. According to People, they've called off their divorce and are prepping for baby No. 3.

As soon as the news broke that Fox was pregnant - and speculation ended over the daddy-to-be - the couple began spending time together again in public. They spent a much-photographed vacation together in Hawaii, and seemed very much the happy Hollywood couple. Now, insiders say they're giving the marriage a second shot.

"Brian and Megan are living together in Malibu with their boys," a source told People. "They have been getting along and seem very happy. They are just waiting for the baby to arrive."

More: Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green had a very modern marriage problem

They already have two children, Noah Shannon and Bodhi Ransom, and have been married for five years. "During their separation, Brian always hoped Megan would change her mind about the divorce and he is very happy that she did," the source says. "They both worked hard to figure out their marriage and things seem great."

Kudos to the couple for working through some very difficult issues with the added pressures of the paparazzi. Now, how to explain to their youngest child that their parents were about to be divorced when mom got pregnant?
