The Republican National Convention is in full swing this week. It's been drawing a lot of attention, but no one has outshined Caitlyn Jenner at the event. If you're confused about why Jenner would be a Republican, it seems you're not alone. She told the crowd outside the convention, “It was easy to come out as trans. It was hard to come out as Republican.”

Part of her was joking, but there's definitely truth behind what she was saying. Many people were shocked to see her show up to support Donald Trump - a guy who hasn't been kind to the LGBT community during his campaign.

Margaret Hoover, president of the American Unity Fund, talked to Jenner outside the Convention and asked if she was actually a “real Republican” despite being part of the LGBT community. Jenner said yes and that although she believes more Republicans need to know more trans people, she believes in what the party stands for.
Jenner said, "I feel like our best hope to get back to a constitutional government... is a Republican party... I'm not giving up on this country. I'm not giving up on this constitution. I want jobs for everybody."

When asked what she thinks Trump should know, she said, "I would tell Donald that there are people out there that have been marginalized for so many years... it's about the next generation coming up. We have to provide a safe environment for them."
While it's hard to believe that Jenner is backing Trump, her responses do prove that she's trying to do the best for the LGBT community while not compromising her personal beliefs. And truthfully, we need more of that nuanced talk when we all bring up politics. It's when we blindly support one side without thinking critically about what we want for America that we get into trouble.
Well, that and letting Trump get this far into the campaign process.

I applaud Jenner for speaking honestly about what she thinks and supports politically. She's definitely been through enough that she could have shied away from the topic and no one would blame her. No one can ever say she isn't brave.
