The foundation
Set the scene with the season's natural elements. Add in as many organic items as possible such as flowers or mini plants to make it feel as though the party is taking place outside! We used an oatmeal-colored tablecloth so that the bright food and drink really popped, but let yourself get creative with checkered or even striped linens that are reminiscent of a picnic table.
The decor
Create a colorful banner by cutting craft paper into circles, then punch a small hole in the top of each one and run twine throughout as the perfect banner for the birthday boy or girl. Remind guests to take a "slice out of summer" by taping die-shaped cutouts to a striped straw. Simply stick them inside food items throughout the buffet for a kid-friendly, whimsical touch! Serve drinks such as lemonade or juice in containers filled with ice as a perfect nod to a picnic's quintessential cooler. Take your creative DIY skills one step further by using chalkboard labels tied with twine around each beverage jug! Set out blankets around the room and encourage everyone to eat on the floor as though they're sitting on the grass!
The colors
Use a bright, bold color palette! Make the party as festive as possible by incorporating vibrant hues for an extra element of fun. Tie red-and-white striped baker's twine around various picnic-related vessels (such as Mason ball jars or jugs) or on top of parchment paper-lined sandwiches to let guests feel they grabbed their sandwiches "to go" just like they’re at a picnic. For a simple DIY project that you can get the little ones involved in, use a round rubber stamp dipped in a brightly colored ink pad to decorate wooden utensils such as forks and spoons.
The food
Set out trays of iconic picnic-themed food such as bite-sized snacks, side salads, fruit and a build-your-own-sandwich bar! Even the pickiest of eaters will have options and (bonus!) everyone will be more likely to load up on their veggies! In lieu of a traditional birthday cake, allow a doughnut tower to be the star of the show! Take it up another notch by adding craft stickers to mini bamboo skewers or ice pop sticks to spell out the name of the birthday boy or girl, or simply state "Happy BD!" alongside bright candles.
The favors
Let guests take home a mini "picnic box." Fill a brown square-shaped kraft box with picnic-related foods such as trail mix or granola bars as a simple reminder of the fun they had at the party!
Remind everyone to kick back and enjoy! After all, that is the point of a picnic, right?
