Grumpy Cat Limited plans to collaborate with Dynamite Entertainment to print both digital comic books and graphic novels starring "The World's Grumpiest Cat," along with her brother and loyal sidekick, Pokey.
The very first Grumpy Cat comics will be released as a three-issue miniseries in fall 2015. We can all look forward to a hardcover Grumpy Cat graphic novel by the time Christmas 2015 rolls around. Even the most hardcore Grumpy Cat followers will be appeased. Dynamite, best known for its comic book bestsellers like A Game of Thrones and The Boys, plans to launch an official Grumpy Cat comic website this summer with new comic strips posted online every week.
Here's just a small sample of the action you can expect from this Grumpy Cat venture. To my untrained eye, the illustrators nailed Grumpy's grumpiness perfectly on this comic book cover:
Keith Davidsen, marketing manager at Dynamite Entertainment, gushes, "With her ever-present pout and sassy disposition, Grumpy Cat has won the hearts of people everywhere. I can tell you, we're thrilled, just absolutely thrilled, to bring this adorable curmudgeon's misadventures to the comic world!"
From The Misadventures of Grumpy Cat (And Pokey!), Davidsen says fans can expect more of what made Grumpy Cat so popular in the first place: unbearable cuteness. He continues, "If you love the memes, the videos and that irresistible scowl, then get ready for the wildly fun antics of Grumpy Cat and Pokey in Dynamite's all-new, all-sensational Grumpy Cat comics!"
But what do Grumpy Cat fans think? Does a Grumpy Cat comic make the disgruntled kitty a sellout, or is it a step in the right direction?
Grumpy Cat twitter
I fall into the Grumpy Cat fan category of those chanting, "More! More! More!" There's something about that cat's sour puss that makes me laugh every time. Circulate a randomly hilarious Grumpy Cat meme on Facebook, and I'm bound to "like" it.
More than a few devotees in Grumpy Cat's massive fan base, which includes 7.6 million Facebook followers and over 31 million YouTube hits, seem to agree with me. These are the same people who are buying the now-viral cat's books, earning her a coveted spot with two New York Times bestsellers. These are the same people who have the Grumpy Cat Lifetime movie on their DVR and may or may not have a Grumpy Cat calendar on their wall. (My 2-year-old is taking a nap with his stuffed Grumpy Cat as I write — guilty.)
Dynamite Entertainment's Grumpy Cat comic books and graphic novels will be sold in the specialty comic book market, with graphic novels also available for purchase online and in major and indie bookstores. If you, too, just gotta have more of this chronically unhappy cat, you can follow her official Facebook page to track the comic's fall release date.
